Absolute Power
This is a continued discussion of the previous post about trusting an all-powerful God.
I cannot quit the subject without further exploration. The question starring me in the face is why. Why cannot God be corrupted? The answer lies in three truths.
1. Power does not corrupt. Power is not the force at work. Mankind is corrupt through and through, from beginning to end. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9 So if you begin with a corrupt heart and throw power into the equation, you will quickly learn what lies inside. Power reveals what is already at work in the heart.
2. “He is the rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4 Based on the first truth and this verse, God is fundamentally different from mankind in His purity and justice. Power reveals what is already in His heart–righteousness, justice, and perfect works. He is pure and cannot be corrupted. Mankind is already corrupt.
3. My husband brought this third truth to my attention. Fear magnifies corruption. An example might be helpful here. Let’s say a man comes into power as king and conquers greatly to establish a massive empire. He (or she if you will) eventually attains complete power and dominates everyone. He has nearly reached immortality–so great is his influence and power. And the one thing standing in his way? Death. No matter how much is conquered, there is no one who can conquer death. All will eventually die. And the fear of it will lead powerful men to use whatever means to shield themselves from death’s grip. Note the great fear of Stolin-terrified of being assassinated and squelched any threat of it. Thus the corruption. But what has God to fear? For Jesus Christ, God come to earth in the flesh, conquered death! He died, was buried, and rose from the dead on the third day. There is only one who has conquered death-Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ, now reigning. Truly all-powerful. He alone has conquered even death. He was, and is, and always will be pure and righteous. Incorruptible!
